Zest Therapy

What is ZEST?

ZEST (Zocular Eyelid  System Treatment) is an exciting new treatment developed by Zocular® to  treat the underlying causes of dry eye – demodex mites and blepharitis.

Over  80% of dry eye issues start with issues at the eyelid margin. The  bacteria, oil residue, dirt and dead skin at the eyelids can cause the  eyes to water, itch, burn, and make the eyes feel dry. Dry eye and  blepharitis are often associated with poor hygiene of the eyelid area.

Zocular Eyelid System Treatment (ZEST) is an in-office eyelid cleaning and debridement system using a natural okra-based gel.

The procedure is quick and painless, bringing immediate relief to symptoms of irritation and dry eye.

Poor  eye hygiene can lead to demodex mites in the hair follicles. Demodex  can exacerbate inflammation by blocking the oil glands at the base of  your eyelashes.

ZEST is an effective treatment for  killing demodex mites, removing dirt, debris and relieving inflammation  of the eyelids – treating the causes of dry eye symptoms.

ZEST  (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment) is like a deep shampoo for the eyes  to clean and debride the eyelids and eye lashes. The procedure involves  applying a gel to the eyelid margin and lashes with a cotton swab and  cleaning in a circular motion, working the gel into a lather.

Following the deep cleansing procedure, the gel is rinsed off with saline solution.

How does ZEST Work?

The procedure focuses on cleansing the eyelids to provide effective treatment.

Known  as an eyelid debridement procedure, this simple, painless process  exfoliates the eyelids and opens up the meibomian glands, thereby  allowing soothing oils to be released into the eye to promote healthy  tear production and lessen dry eye symptoms.

The procedure is quick and painless, bringing immediate relief to symptoms of irritation and dry eye.

After  the in office treatment, we recommend gentle and effective home  treatments to clean and keep the bacteria away from the lids that are  anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Eye hygiene includes  keeping the eyelids, eyelid margin and lashes clean.

Dirt and  debris on the edges of your eyelids can lead to symptoms of itching,  burning and gritty eyes. With every blink, dirt and debris may enter the  tear film and coat the eye, leading to redness and irritation

The  ZEST gel is formulated with a refined extract of okra- an edible green  seed pod; to lift and clear oil, debris and residue along the eyelid  margin. Okra is a powerful cleansing ingredient that is also gentle to  use around the eye, helping to calm and soothe inflammation.

ZEST may be the answer to help your eyes look and feel better.

Meibomian Gland Expression Treatment: MiboFlo

MiboFlo is a thermal pulsation treatment paired with in-office meibomian gland expression to treat meibomian gland dysfunction. It is a non-invasive, 12 minute procedure performed that uses gentle heat to liquefy and loosen clogs in the meibomian glands.

After the procedure, the lids are then gently expressed to improve the flow of meibum (oil) through the glands. MiboFlo improves the function of meibomian glands and protects them long term.

The treatment protocol recommends beginning with 3 treatments spread 2 weeks apart. Single treatments are then performed on an as-needed basis based on patient signs and symptoms.

For many of our patients, improvement in screen time comfort and more stable vision is reported after the initial 3 treatments. For those who wear eye makeup, they report less makeup smearing and a reduction in watery eyes.

For patients with more severe symptoms, MiboFlo can be done quarterly or semi-annually. The procedure is often combined with IPL for patients presenting with multiple ocular surface disease (OSD) conditions, including ocular rosacea, blepharitis and dry eye disease (DED).
